Overview of Requirements / Pre-requisites for Support / Funding
a. Government support
b. Private Support - Foundations / Corporations
In order to function as a public entity of any kind, asking membership dues, making promises to members, etc., we must FIRST be legal - that is, obedient to the rules governing such operation within the government regulations.
In order to do that, we must first determine what type of organization we want to be. Our current articles of Incorporation filed with the State of Hawaii state that we are non-profit, but we haven't filed such notice or necessary papers with the IRS.
Stephanie counted the number of documents required by the County to route a contract and it is attached. We have 10 required to set you up as a contractor. Federal and state agencies may have more though. And some of the documents (like your tax clearance certificates) will require that you've completed other documents (like filing your 990 taxes). It's certainly not insurmountable, but can be a bit overwhelming at the beginning.
Government support would be given if we chose to become
- 501(c)6 - Membership Association, Business Association, etc.
- 501(c)3 - Charitable, churches, educational, where we could give deductions for donations, etc.
In order to qualify for these options, we would have to comply with the filing process, paperwork, etc. Once we did that, we would then have to compete with other non-profit entities (over 1,000 in Hawaii) for available funding.
This is where we muster our forces to search and apply for grants. This is also an arduous process, and we cannot do it without guidance from knowledgeable helpers. Beth Dykstra would be the place to begin for that support and guidance.
